Candle Care Guide

Get the most out of every flame.

Our candles are crafted to bring you hours of beautiful fragrance and ambiance - but a little care goes a long way. Follow these simple tips to ensure a clean, even burn every time.

The First Burn (This One's Important!)

Your first burn sets the tone for the life of your candle.

Let it burn for 2-3 hours - or until the wax melts all the way to the edges of the jar. This creates a full melt pool and prevents tunneling (when the candle burns down the middle, leaving wax on the sides).

Soy wax has a memory. If you don't let it melt fully on the first burn, it'll remember that and keep burning in the same narrow pattern. So take your time, light it when you can relax, and let it do its thing.

Trim Your Wick

Before each burn, trim your wick to about 5mm (1/4 inch).

This keeps the flame steady, reduces soot, and helps your candle burn cleaner and longer. You can use wick trimmers, nail clippers, or even scissors - whatever works.

If you notice the flame getting too high or flickering, it's a sign your wick needs a trim. Just blow it out, let it cool, trim it, and relight.

Burn Time & Safety

  • Burn for 2-4 hours at a time for the best results. Any longer and the jar can get too hot.
  • Never leave a candle unattended. We know you know this, but it's worth saying.
  • Keep candles away from drafts, pets, children, and anything flammable.
  • Always place your candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface.
  • Stop burning when there's about 1cm of wax left at the bottom. This protects the jar and keeps things safe.

Troubleshooting

Why is my candle tunneling?

This usually happens if the first burn wasn't long enough. The wax didn't melt to the edges, so it's now burning in a tunnel. To fix it, try burning the candle for longer periods (3-4 hours) to encourage a full melt pool. You can also carefully scrape away excess wax from the sides (when cool) to help even things out.

Why is there black soot on the jar?

This is usually caused by a wick that's too long or a flame that's flickering in a draft. Trim your wick before each burn and move your candle away from windows, fans, or air vents.

Why does my candle look frosted or uneven?

That's completely normal! Natural soy wax can develop a frosted or textured appearance after cooling - it's actually a sign of purity. It doesn't affect the burn quality, scent throw, or performance at all. It just means your candle is 100% natural, with no additives to keep it artificially smooth.

My candle isn't throwing much scent. What's wrong?

Make sure you're burning it in an appropriately sized room (our 300ml candles work best in medium-sized spaces, while 180ml candles are perfect for smaller rooms or cosy corners). Also, ensure you're letting the wax melt fully to the edges - this releases the fragrance properly.

Reuse & Recycle

Once your candle is finished, don't toss the jar!

How to clean your jar:

  1. Pour boiling water into the jar (leave a little space at the top).
  2. Let it sit until the water cools. The leftover wax will float to the surface and harden.
  3. Remove the wax, pour out the water, and wash the jar with warm soapy water.
  4. Reuse it for plants, storage, makeup brushes, or anything else you love.

Our jars are designed to be beautiful and functional - so give them a second life.

A Few Extra Tips

  • Store your candles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to preserve the fragrance and appearance.
  • Use a candle snuffer or gently blow out the flame. Avoid blowing too hard, as this can cause hot wax to splatter.
  • Recenter your wick while the wax is still soft after blowing out the candle. This helps it burn evenly next time.
